The word “aphrodisiac” derives from Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Since ancient times, people use aphrodisiacs to increase attractiveness or to enhance sexual performance and pleasure. Some consider substances, such as mandrake or asparagus, aphrodisiacs because of their phallic shape. Others exhibit an invigorating physical effect, for example ginseng. Aphrodisiacs can enhance mood, delight the senses, and energize the chakras.
The next time love is elusive or the sex drive is not what it used to be, try some of Mother Nature’s natural aphrodisiacs.
1) Fruits and veggies: the goddesses’ bounty bubbles over with L-arginine. Asparagus is an especially vibrant source of folic acid, which increases the histamine production needed for a satisfying sexual release. Bananas not only resemble the male sex organ, but also are rich in potassium and B vitamins. Both component aid the production of sex hormones. Bananas also contain Bufotenine, an alkaloid compound that improves mood and self-confidence. Avocados, arugula, carrots, celery, watermelon, mangoes, and figs all have long histories of use as aphrodisiacs.
2) Nuts: almonds promote fertility and an increase in sexual energy. Pine nuts contain high levels of zinc, which aids in fertility and is a natural stimulant for women. Nuts packed full of L-arginine include; walnuts, peanuts, and cashews, which will help with performance issues in men and women.
3) Seafood: oysters are the “poster boy” aphrodisiac dish, because not only do they resemble female sex organs, but also because they are rich in zinc, which can help with male fertility, potency and sex drive. Salmon and other fatty fish like mackerel and sardines are great sources of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which can also help improve mood, to strengthen the aura for love and the desire to have sex.
