When fluff isn’t enough. I know what you’re thinking – what in the heck does that mean? No, it’s not about marshmallows, meringue, or your pillow. Let me tell you a little story and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

I know a brilliant journalist. She graduated top of her class, had mad writing skills, and the nose of a bloodhound to sniff out a new story. Investigative journalism is what lit a fire in her belly. When she graduated, she was grateful for any journalist job she could get. After all, she didn’t expect to work at the New York Times being all fresh-faced and green around the edges. Plus – not too many jobs for an investigative reporter. So she took a job with a gossip newspaper.

Now she likes to read the dish on her favorite celebrity just like the next guy. But after 5 years of doing this, she pressed her editor to write something more. It was a no go. She could quit and find another job, but in NYC she knew she had to have the funds to make rent. So she stayed. After another few years – it all became routine.

Then one day in her mid-30’s she felt something was missing in her life. She had a great husband, perfect baby, and could pick and choose her stories at the gossip rag. But something was missing. Something she couldn’t put her finger on.

Then it hit her — she needed to pursue her first love – investigative journalism.

THE FLUFF WAS NO LONGER ENOUGH!

She went through the paces at the gossip rag, but it wasn’t her passion. The fluff just wouldn’t do it any longer.

So what about you? Do you need more than fluff? If so, do you know what that is? Discuss below in the comments!
